Vitamin D and Sun
Vitamin D deficiency affects 50% of the population worldwide. Deficiency may be higher in certain populations depending on lifestyle and environmental factors. One main source of vitamin D is exposure to sunlight which helps with the production of vitamin D in the skin.
Adequate vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium which may reduce your risk of bone disease. Some research has also found that vitamin D may help to fight against cancer and heart disease and prevent mental impairments and falls in older adults.
Groups at higher risk for vitamin D deficiency include:

- Breastfed infants
- People with limited sun exposure
- People with dark skin
- People with fat malabsorption (i.e. medical conditions such as forms of liver disease, Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis)
