How do I avoid excessive Holiday weight gain?

The holiday season is not an excuse to eat in excess!

  • Don’t go to parties hungry. Eat a snack or small meal prior.
  • Concentrate on socializing and having fun—not eating. Enjoy time with family and friends away from the kitchen or buffet.
  • Use smaller plates.
  • Limit yourself to one plate of food.
    • Choose:
      • Fruits
      • Non-starchy vegetables (tossed salads, steamed, grilled, or raw vegetables)
      • Lean turkey, ham, chicken, fish, or plant protein without heavy sauces or gravies.
    • Limit or choose smaller portions:
      • Sweets (cakes, cookies, pies, etc.),
      • Fried foods or foods with gravies or heavy sauces
      • Eggnog
      • Stuffing
      • Mayo-based salads (potato salad, pasta salad, dips, etc.)

Alcoholic beverages can be high in calories and lead to overeating later in the evening. Limit yourself to 1-2 drinks.

  • Try lower calorie alcoholic beverages:
    • Light beer
    • Wine
    • Champagne
    • Spirits (gin, vodka, rum, whiskey).
  • Beware of high sugar mixers such as sodas and juices. Consider tying club soda, diet sodas, or light juices.
